Friday, February 26, 2010 & Catch Up

It's Friday night, February 26, 2010, but first:
By late Wednesday afternoon Leanna was starting to return to normal.  (Justin threw up at 7:00 this morning but seemed fine all day long).  Tom's not feeling so well.  Thursday was a snowday, which we actually took as a snowday, and today was the lovely hearing, which it turned out they cancelled on us last minute.  So Tom lost a workday for no reason, we walked there for no reason, and all all that anxiety and sleeplessness had no release yet.  It should be rescheduled for about two weeks from now.  Without all that hanging over my head I was able to start cleaning when we got home, so I took care of messes that should have been cleaned two days ago!  Not that it's not still hanging over my head, but the tension isn't quite as bad as it will be when the new date for it approaches.  Thursday night Leanna and I started reading The Promise by Eva Schloss, Anne Frank's posthumus step-sister.

Schoolwork Accomplished today:

*locating PA and washington DC on a map in the court house waiting room.
*Science experiments with a periscope, kaleidiscope, optical illusions, mirrors, and underwater rainbows.  It's from a kit Leanna got for Christmas.  She really liked the periscope!
*Pointless walk to liberty plaza and back through snow and slush!
*Hopefully we will start Through the Looking Glass and what Alice Found There.

Sick Day:
Leanna was throwing up all night last night and all day today.  She hasn't eaten anything at all today and drank a bit of water, but until late tonight, was throwing that up too.  I didn't do school with her under these conditions.  But at night I did read the last three chapters in Alice In Wonderland to her.  I would have read more to her during the day too but she was sleeping for most of it.  In the evening she was feeling well enough that she read Mrs. Piggle Wiggle again while I went to the store.
I took Justin with me to the store tonight and on the way home quizzed him again about where we live: address, city, state, country.  He did fine until state, which he listed as: "buhrockobama."  I explained that Barack Obama was our president.  He then commented that George Washington had been dead for a long time.  Then when I asked him what country we live in, first he said "North America", then "buhrockobama America?"

Schoolwork accomplished:

*One full page of two digit by one digit multiplication, and two half-finished pages(long story that involves water spilled and a lost paper)
*Spelling list 13-words copied twice each
*We got our gym excersize walking to Pinebrook and back
*Leanna painted suncatchers with Deb
*On the way back Leanna picked up some nature and at home made a fairy house on the table with it.  The house was later destroyed (not intentionally).
*We read together: How to Write Funny Poetry
*We explored a kids' poetry website and did some fill in the blank poems
*Leanna was inspired and wrote a few pages of her own poetry.  Plus some she composed while in the bathtub.  She really had fun with it, and I enjoyed seeing her enjoy it.
*I read some poetry to her from my old college books.  (not easy to find ones she would comprehend, but in some cases that doesn't matter so much.  I just want her to get a feel for the cadence of the words and hear examples of good poetry.)  We read some Robert Frost, William Carlos Williams, Langston Hughes, Adrienne Rich, even Sylvia Plath.
*We also read a chapter of Alice in Wonderland, but at that point Leanna had begun to get sick, and she'd been throwing up.  So she fell asleep somewhere during my reading of it.  Later she woke up and I re-read the last half of the chapter to her again.
