add to homeschool summary:
We combine subjects in a lot of areas.  We read a piece of literature such as Little House in the Big Woods and talk about the author, illustrator, whether the story is true or exaggerated(it was written from childhood memories), the author's purpose, new vocabulary in the book.......but we also use it as a springboard to add some history.  We talk about that time period.  We compared life then to now, and researched  things we didn't understand in the book.  We drew pictures and did crafts related to the book.  They got practice with handwriting doing their lapbook pieces. We listened to music to complement it, and talked a bit about music history.  We did a bit of science when we studied the animals discussed in the big woods.  We also used it as a way to discuss character development-how the children behaved, what was expected of them, the moral lessons in the book.  In this one example we studied literature, vocabulary, handwriting, history, music, science and art. I try to incorporate other subjects as often as I can, and the combinations vary, but I think it really aids in their learning.
