Then and Now Series: Holiday candle tradition at Easton Circle in Easton Pennsylvania is home to one of America's oldest downtowns.

Typically, the "town center" of any community shifts and moves over the generations, but a few epicenters remain the same location as they were in colonial days. Easton's Circle, originally known as Center Square, was laid out and developed in 1752 at the intersections of Third Street and Northampton Street.

The Soldiers and Sailors Monument erected in 1900 graces the center of the circle, a Civil War monument memorializing the four branches of Union Army of the time; the infantry, cavalry, artillary, and Union navy. Other key Easton events are commemorated with plaques and memorials around the outside including a Peace Treaty during the French and Indian War, and one of the first three public readings of the Declaration of Independence on July 8 1776 (the other two were in Philadelphia and Trenton).

After Thanksgiving, and until just after the New Year, the Peace Candle is assembled over the Civil War Monument to celebrate the holiday season. It is the highest and longest Peace Candle in the world. This tradition began in 1951.
