Schoolwork Accomplished:
*Math word problems from Mr. Popper's Penguins worksheet & Math word problems from The Chronicles of Narnia worksheet.
*Drew a penguin and cut out pieces to make an icebox and penguin. (part of a Mr. Popper's Penguins lapbook). I had Justin and Timothy do this as well.
*We discussed alliteration. She wrote down some examples of alliteration from the book.
*Colored & read a few pages in the newly arrived Dover Life in Ancient Rome coloring book.
*Wrote a story from a prompt (made by me) about receiving a box with airholes and something black and white inside. I was actually aiming for a penguin, since we started reading Mr. Popper's Penguins, but she made it a horse.
*She re-read that gymnastics book(the whole thing) we bought from the A-town library.
*lots of artsy stuff-coloring in coloring books (besides the Roman one), drawing pictures in her notebook, illustrating the story she wrote, designing things with the foam pieces lying about on the third floor here. She played school with her dolls and made a book that was supposed to be made by her doll Kirsten.
*played multiplication games online for about an hour.
*We read three chapters in Mr. Popper's Penguins tonight.
This was another day where it was like pulling teeth to get her to do any work. Plus it was Pop-Pop's day off so we had to be quiet all day.

Here are a few penguin experiments:
Keeping Warm. Discuss how penguins have special down feathers to keep them warm. You will need 3 zip-lock bags, ice cold water and ice cubes for this activity. Fill one bag 1/2 way with water and ice and seal it shut completely. Zip the second bag almost all the way up but blow some air into it before you seal it completely. (it should be an air pillow) First put the bag with the air under the icecube/water filled bag. Then do the same with a flat bag. Which is warmer. Why do you think so?
For the above "blubber glove" experiment, here's an image I found on the internet:
http://www.mhcbe.ab.ca/St_Francis/gr...ts/blubber.gif
Explain to the children that a penguin has a special gland in its body that produces an oil which makes the penguins feathers waxy. The waxy feathers protect the penguin from extreme cold and icy waters in the South Pole. In order to show the children how the water repels off of the waxy feathers, draw a picture of a penguin. Have the children color the feathers of the penguin with black and white crayons. Pour a cup of water all over the picture. The water will soak the paper however will roll off the crayon. This science experiment will show the children that the water will roll off of the penguin because of the waxy feathers. The children loved this experiment.
Talk about the five different types of penguins. Have a life-size drawing of an emperor penguin attached to the wall. Measure each child using a roll of adding machine paper, cut the paper at the child's height and attach it to the wall beside the emperor penguin. Now the children can compare their height with that of an emperor penguin.
I also do a feather experiment to show the kids why baby penguins can't survive in the cold water until their adult feather grows in. You need to find two feathers... a downy one and another feather... I can always find crow feathers on the road! Put both in water and compare. The downy one stays soggy for a long time.... a bird would freeze with this type of feather. The other one, is basically unaffected by water... the water drips off. The bird dries quickly and so doesn't freeze.

Schoolwork Accomplished:
*Wrote spelling list 17 twice each
*Wrote each word from list 16 once (still having trouble with them)
*Practiced cursive alphabet and name
*Reading comprehension story and poem with worksheet questions about each
*Fraction workbook-2 pages
*separate fraction worksheet on comparing fractions
*Geography-catching up, did 4 weeks of lessons today.
*Corrections on everything-math, english, geography
*Speed multiplication page (this was disheartning. She did awful on this one. We'll have to go over it again.) At that point a neighborhood girl was over waiting for her to finish, so I let her go play (socialization and gym and all that). She wouldn't have done quality work at that point anyway.
*Multiplication.com: 3s-2 minutes, 20 seconds. 6: 2 minutes, 40 seconds. 4s:2 minutes, 30 seconds.
*Read Mr. Popper's Penguins to all the kids (though it was really only Leanna and Justin listening). We read the first 7 chapters tonight, and they were begging me to continue.
