Schoolwork Accomplished:

A field trip day of sorts.  It was Columbus Day, which I forgot when planning to stop by the bank before going downtown, make a surprise trip to McDonalds before taking Flat Stanley Pictures and go to Lorelei's doctor's appt.  Then I was planning to go to the library and then Antonios where Tom would pick us up and we'd go grocery shopping.  It did not work out that way though.

The alarm didn't go off and I woke up when we were supposed to be leaving.  I didn't get to eat and apparently Leanna didn't either.  Jacob lost his shoes which were placed in the bin the night before (where did they go??), I forgot the camera and sent Justin back for it, he couldn't find it so I had to run back for it, we didn't have time to stop at McDonalds for coffee for me or even a small treat for the kids, the kids weren't behaving at all, I got so mad I was going to take them home, but decided we should eat......I felt funny taking the kids to Antonios without Tom so we went to McDonalds instead.  Tom called then so we met him and I just dropped off the overdue library books and we just went straight to the grocery store.  A very long day.  We managed to get a couple pictures with Stanley but they weren't great.  I'd like a re-do if I could.

The boys and I go through their work and choose items to put in their portfolios. These days are a good reminder to them of how far they have come in difficult subjects.
"The items we choose aren't always perfect," she says. "For example, I'll include both the first and final draft of the same essay. I might also use a math test with a low score and include the correct answers solved by the child after we reviewed it together."

Field Trip Day!

We caught the 7:30 bus to another bus to another bus to get to Allentown for Mayfair's Discovery Day for kids.   We got lots of excersize, the kids made musical instruments (harps and rainsticks), watched a science demonstration from the Da Vinci Science Center, made block formations, made quilt squares, used motors to draw with crayons, played on giant letters, watched the ducks in the pond, tried out hoola hoops and later participated in a hoola hoop/yoga demonstration on stage.  We heard music and looked at some of the artist's booths. The morning was cold, the afternoon was very hot and it was a LONG UPHILL walk to get to Grammy's house afterwards!!

a few notes on improving kids writing

Just for me, notes from an article aimed at kids in school, here's what I thought I could use:

What can parents do to help their children develop writing skills?

No. 1, teach kids to write because they have something to say, not because it's a dull chore. You don't tell kids to read because the teacher says so, but because they love Harry Potter. Use journals and letters to get kids to write outside the classroom. In this summer of scaled-down vacations — all the greater opportunity to emulate travel logs like those of Lewis and Clark — it's a great opportunity to have kids write for the right reasons.

Also, don't dismiss the importance of handwriting to help kids slow down and think.

What's the most common misconception parents have about teaching kids to write?

Some parents think it's too 20th century, but writing remains extremely important. Our colleges are spending $30 billion a year on writing training. Kids need to be able to write, and the failure to write is hurting kids.

Another misconception — by some teachers too — is that nonfiction is boring, not exciting, but this underestimates the intellectual power of kids.

What's the hardest thing about teaching kids to write?

Loving them enough to make them do things again, to give them feedback that's honest and accurate. Way too many teachers and parents don't have the heart to make kids do things again.

Schoolwork Accomplished:

We took Lorelei for a doctor's appt. today-which meant a walk downtown.  So that took up part of the AM (preparation), all the afternoon, and a bit of the evening.  We walked to the main branch of the library then, stayed til the boys started melting, and then walked to Antonios.  We ate there, called Tom and then drove home.  Long day, big stack of books (I could so very easily tripled-or more-that stack of books!!  So we got physical excersize with all our walking, socialization-with the other kids at the office, and the staff, the people at Tony's (the library wasn't busy and there weren't other people to talk to there today), although Leanna did have some conversation with the librarian who checked her out.  At Antonios, the waitress told Tom his kids were well mannered.  (It takes so much work to keep it that way!!)
Leanna was reading while walking to the doctor's appt.-The Spiderwick Chronicles book 2.
She also read 3 Magic Tree House books-Mummies in the Morning, The Knight at Dawn, Dinosaurs Before Dark-while at the library.  And she also started Nancy Drew: The Secret of Mirror Bay.
